May project: my typical day

It’s day 15 in the blog every day challenge. Today’s prompt are showing photos from a typical day.

Currently I’m visiting family in Michigan so my day yesterday was anything but typical but I’ll share anyhow (also there are a lot of feet pictures). These were all taken with my iphone so the quality is perhaps not the best.

IMG_2015-My mom owns a salon and spa so I went into work with her to catch up on some blogging and try out an easy curl effect under the dryer.IMG_2019
-Then I took a lunch break (leftover vegan pad thai) and read a book.IMG_2022
-Then my mom sweetly offered to give my a much needed pedicure. I read a few magazines.IMG_2029
-I cuddled with my mom’s little dog a lot. We had some good laughs when I put my scarf on her. IMG_2030
-I went to jazzercise with my mom (she goes most days and is a little off her schedule with my visit).IMG_2031
-We made meatless tacos for dinner.IMG_2032
-And ate them outside until it got too chilly.IMG_2033
Then we lazied around and watched a few tv shows.

What’s a typical visiting family day like for you?

The farmers market is back!

IMG_1914 IMG_1916 IMG_1917

There are a lot of year round farmers markets in Seattle but the one that is really close to our place is closed through winter and it just opened the other weekend! Yeah! We visited last weekend and stocked up on vegetables and such but I was most excited about this here stickle-pickle on a stick. I ate it happily all the while dripping pickle juice wherever I went. I’m excited for warmer weather, the farmer’s market every weekend, and of course more PICKLES!

I played croquet!

IMG_1897 IMG_1899 IMG_1900

The other night I played croquet for the first time! I was invited to a get together at a house with a backyard. I miss having a private outdoor space so it was nice to “borrow” one for a bit. Would you believe that 3 of us chose colors matching our outfits completely by accident? It’s true so you better. It was pretty fun but man does it take a long time. We got maybe a half a game in before everyone just sort of wandered off. I’d say I was a close second. Not bad.

They also had a bonfire which was fun and there were talks of having outdoor movies in the summer. Yes please! On the way home my friends and I decided to get a little ice cream before we called it a night. {I got a coconut milk based ice cream and it was pretty good}

Last day in salt lake city

Sunday morning after all of the SNAP activities were over a few of us had later flights or flights the next day so we all carpooled around Salt Lake City to see some sites. We started at the capital building and then headed to Temple Square to walk around. All of the flowers were in bloom and the temple itself was quite beautiful.

Then it was time for me to head back to the airport. I was brave and chose to take the train, but this time I had it figured out. Until next time Salt Lake! I had a great time.

I’ve been back from SNAP for 3 days now and I’m still processing. I’m trying not to let my overwhelm make me unproductive. I have a tendency to let that happen. I’m attempting to take action today. The sun shining bright today might derail me but I think that’s acceptable. Ha!

Anyhow I learned a lot of valuable information this weekend from a lot of talented and inspiring women. I was also brave enough to introduce myself to quite a few of them. This was a struggle at times. I worried I wouldn’t have anything to say or that I’d say the wrong thing. It helped to remind myself that the woman on the other end has the same worries.

A few of my favorite classes from the weekend included:

Basic blogging tips taught by Desiree of The 36th Avenue, Sarah of Thrifty Decor Chick, and Amy of the Idea Room.

DIY lighting and electrical tutorial taught by Brittany of Pretty Handy Girl and Sandra of Sawdust and Paperscraps.

How to effectively use affiliate links taught by Jessica of the Creative Mom.

How to plan, launch, and grow a handmade business taught by Amy Cornwell, Diana of Livy Love Designs, and Katie of Vintage Rose Wraps.

Working with virtual assistants taught by Alissa of Rags to Stitches and Skye McLain.

Object photography taught by Caroline of Armelle.

Now what to do with all this information?  I guess we’ll see…

What was I thinking getting on that train?

This past weekend I went to SNAP. I feel like my head is a jumble from this weekend and I need to process some before I share more so first I will tell you a little story about the beginning on the trip.

When I travel I try as much as possible to use the local public transportation. I live in a bigger city so I’m used to it and I like to think I’m pretty good at it. I flew into Salt Lake City and decided to take the train from the airport to Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, UT. I got on the train at the airport and took it past downtown to transfer. I got off and quickly realized where the next platform was and headed in that direction. I was interrupted on the way by a man asking if I had change for a dollar. Without thinking I automatically said no, an auto response of living in the city. I took 2 steps and was like you know what I do have change for a dollar and that was rude. I handed him 4 quarters and he handed me a dollar and I kept going.

I figured out where I needed to be and waited for the train that said it was arriving in a 20 minutes. The sign still said 7 minutes to arrival when a different train pulled up. This should have been the biggest clue that it was not my train. But something in me wanted to make sure and check it out. I looked around but couldn’t figure out which train it was and what way it was headed. I stepped on thinking I could ask someone but I didn’t see anyone in that section. I was looking at the map and decided if it were wrong I would just get off at the next stop and turn myself around. Then the door closed and we started moving.

In about 2 seconds I realized we were headed North and I should be headed South. That was really stupid I was thinking and hoped the next stop wasn’t far. It didn’t seem to be according to the map but then I noticed we weren’t quite following the route and we were going really slow. I sat down and tried to stay calm but calm quickly turned to a mild state of panic when I realized we were heading into the train yard and through some sort of a train wash. I had no idea what was going on but it was at this point I realized I was the ONLY person on the train. I discovered this after frantically dragging my suitcase through the train cars and not finding a single person.

I tried to figure out how to use the emergency phone but couldn’t and I tried to notify the conductor but it wasn’t working. Finally the train stopped in the yard and I decided I needed to find the conductor. It was creepily quiet out there. I grabbed my bag and dragged it to what I figured was the end of the train where I saw a backpack that I deduced belonged to the conductor. I stared at it for a few seconds until finally a man appeared who belonged to the backpack. I blurted out, “oh my gosh, what’s going on?”. He explained that they thought everyone was off the train and they must not have seen me step on and that he apologized and would figure out a way to get me on track.

I was relieved and at this point starting to feel less panicked and just more extremely silly. He pulled the train back into the garage to get me off safely and I followed him into the control room of the place to see if anyone could give me a ride. There wasn’t anyone official around but there was a man getting off his shift who happened to live in Lehi where I needed to be. This is the point in most stories where people warn you not to ride in cars with strange men. I was pretty sure I would be fine and I agreed to the ride.

I’m not completely without sensibility though, I’m pretty with it. I sneakily took a photo of the license plate number and texted it to Walker and said I will call in 20 minutes and if not take action. He was all what?! are you all right?! I texted back yeah I think so I’ll explain later. The man was perfectly nice and we chatted during the car ride. I found out quite a bit about his days and a horseshoer. The only weird thing about the ride was when he pulled over on the side of the freeway to make sure his hatch was closed tightly. So 20 minutes later we were in front on my hotel and I unloaded my bag, thanked him for the ride, and proceeded with my day thinking how strangely the smallest events can turn out.

I thought back to the change for a dollar and I like to think that by taking a few moments to be kind to someone else it all came back to me and turned my mishap into a funny story with a good ending.

Petals in the air…hmm

IMG_1774 IMG_1775

With all these beautiful petals all over the ground I told Walker I really wanted to scoop a bunch of them up and toss them in the air while he takes a picture. He made that sound he makes when I say something he thinks is silly and that was that.

The other morning though while we were taking a walk I saw the perfect tree with large petals underneath and we gave it a go. I don’t think he understood the vision because after the first picture he says do you want them going up or down. I was thinking well in the picture at all would be good (so I don’t look like a weirdo). Ha! We tried again and it was better but still not quite there. If we had had the camera and not the phone maybe. But maybe it just looks better in my head. Moving on.

Over the weekend Walker and I went to see the tulips in Skagit Valley with a couple of our friends. I heard the fields were pretty but I really didn’t realize it was going to be absolutely breathtaking. The colors and shapes were so intense. I think we all just took turns exclaiming how pretty everything was. It was quite remarkable to see so many tulips in one place. Also we got super lucky with the weather. All day rain was in the forecast but while we were in the fields the sun was shining. Perfection.

Walker hijacked my camera so of course he got the more vivid shots but I got a few alright ones with my phone. After we all took our fair share of photos (it was so hard to choose which ones to share) we drove by a few more fields before heading into town for a post tulip looking drink and some food. It was a perfectly lovely day. If you live around this area I highly recommend you visit the tulip fields. Make sure to wear your rain boots because it was muddy out there.

Container planting

IMG_1712 IMG_1714 IMG_1715

Last night I went to free class put on by my grocery story co-op. It was all about container gardening which is all we can do at this point being in a small apartment with no outdoor space. I wanted to know what grows best in pots and with a limited amount of sun and shorter growing season here in the Northwest.

It was pretty informative and after a while we got to pot our own plant and get our hands dirty. I chose a baby chard plant and I’m looking forward to watching it grow. With my mini garden started I’m getting really excited about what’s next. Lettuce, strawberries, maybe some herbs?

Do you have any container plants growing? What wisdom can you share?

The process of making friends

DSC_1848 DSC_1849 DSC_1854

This past weekend I was invited to a supper club by a girl I had met through a mutual friend when I first moved here. I was especially excited because her supper club were headed to an Indian restaurant that takes only 1 reservation and it’s for a table in the kitchen. They had planned it a few months in advance and had one seat left.

I was also pretty apprehensive because I would be meeting 4 totally new people all at once. I’m pretty good one on one but I was intimidated that I would be the odd one out and that I would feel awkward and not know what to say.

Turns out I was wrong. They were all super nice and unique and interesting in their own ways. They seemed genuinely interested to get to know more about me and made me feel welcome at their supper club. I felt completely at ease and didn’t find myself at a loss for words. I think it was a success. Unless you count the fact that I left my delicious leftovers in the back seat of car. That was a bit of a bummer.
